Every day seems to bring more issues to light. Breakdown occurs rather quickly in another area when a remedy is found in the first. We accept the challenge to face the perplexing situation in the eye and solve it because we are a responsible sort. Struggles don't seem to get easier as life goes on. As we become older, the order seems to be exactly the reverse.
"Sink or swim" appears to be spoken with a nod of the head or a shrug of the shoulders. Sinkage, of course, isn't truly a personal preference. Swim it is then. Swim is always chosen. The award generally belongs to swim. Until....
Until? There are instances when a person may feel overpowered by the present situation. It can be a brand-new battle. Another possibility is that interferences are increasing rapidly in number. We may need a third option, a fresh opportunity for effectiveness, in this situation.
Oh, there is also the third choice. Peter encountered it. Jesus once marched across a lake's surface defying the rules of physics. The loyal disciple was astounded. He had never seen anything like it and had never even considered such a possibility. But there it was, along with Jesus' invitation to follow suit.
I know you've got to be joking.
Peter exited the boat and took a few steps on the lake. He started to sink as soon as he turned away from Jesus and peered at the ominous waves. But for a while, Peter disregarded reason, the laws of gravitational science, and his own feeble belief system.
He moved through the water.
Recognize it. A Christian's path is constantly pushed—even challenged—to switch from the "sink or swim" maxim to the "walk on water" sincere reality. Peter's little excursion was not intended to eliminate jobs in the boating sector. Instead, it was meant to awaken us and bring us into a new sort of walk that neither makes sense nor can be described. To be believed is the most it can accomplish.
I support you thus. You face obstacles and very choppy waters. You are reminded of the constant threat by the towering waves and the strong current. Their messages are intended to convince you that there is no chance for overcoming this particular challenge—or the one after that, for that matter.
But believing that Jesus is atop our turbulence and beckoning us to approach him on foot is a compelling appeal for our devoted fortitude to leave the safety of the boat and begin the journey. Simply said, it's too exhilarating to consider the possibility that God might use us to accomplish what is impossible.
Be optimistic. Stop trying to keep your beliefs safe. Stop following religious convention and dare to venture into the waters of mystery, apparent futility, and presumptive failure. Straight into those menacing storms you go. You're going to move a bit. Sooner or later, you'll need Jesus to help you finish the journey. He'll be there to support you!
