The two-story Saints Academy school building in Busa Buji, Jos, Nigeria, collapsed, leaving at least 22 people—including students—confirmed dead. According to Plateau state authorities on Saturday, a portion of the school building, which houses more than a thousand pupils, collapsed on Friday just after children who are 15 years of age or younger arrived for class to prepare for their examinations.
While terrified locals looked on pathetically and furiously from the area, rescuers attempted to extract casualties from the debris using heavy gear; however, several offered to assist in any way they could, even using Hammers and just their hands to help.
Alfred Alabo, the force's representative, reported that 132 pupils had been saved and were receiving treatments at some of the hospital in the States town.
Some of the rescued students are still being treated at the hospital, according to a Facebook post from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The rescue effort has come to a conclusion. The Plateau state government called for the immediate closure of schools with such poor structure of building and he went further to blame the school for settling near a riverbank.
In the past two years, over a dozen building collapse accidents have been reported in Nigeria, indicating an increasing frequency of these events.
