Om Rajesh Puri OBE was a powerful Indian actor who was widely acclaimed for his performances in mainstream Indian and British mainstream commercial films.

Om Puri also has a reputation for acting in free-flowing films, art films and Hollywood. He has been awarded the Indian Civil Padma Shri Award four times at most.

Actor Ompuri's first film was Chor Chor Chup Ja, a children's film. During this time, he also worked at the Actors Studio to meet for the last time, where future actors like Gulshan Grover and Anil Kapoor would be his students.

Later, Puri has been acclaimed for his work in numerous Indian films as well as in many films made in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Ompuri made his debut in the mainstream film genre based on a Marathi play of the same name by Vijay Tendulkar in the 1978 Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal.

It was directed by Hariharan and Mani Kaul in collaboration with 16 graduates of KFTII. He claims that he was given "peanuts" for his best work.

Along with Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil, she was one of the leading actors who was then especially known as an actor in an art film.

Ompuri acted as a drink-chewed ‘Kakkaji’ in Hindi television serials such as Kakkaji Kahin (1988) roughly meaning “Uncle Says”, which was a great parody of politicians.

And Mr. Yogi (1989) as a civilized ‘facilitator’ who enjoys pulling the protagonist’s legs. These two serials have underlined the versatility of Om Puri as a comedian.

He received much acclaim for his performance in Govinda Nihalani's television film Tamas (1988) based on a Hindi novel of the same name.

He has acted in comic roles in Hindi films such as Jaane V Do Yaro which has reached the status of a religion, followed by Aunty 420 (1997), Hera Ferry (2000), Chor Machaye Shore (2002).

Om Puri Diwane Huye Pagal, Chup Chup Ke, Kissmet Connection and Malamal Weekly (2006) and Oh My God. He was a regular in films directed by Priyadarshan and Kamal Hasan.

He has won many awards in his life, most notably: 1971: Filmfare Award for Best Actor - Akrosh, 1981: National Film Award for Best Actor (29th National Film Award) - Arahan.

Also, 1973: National Film Award for Best Actor (31st National Film Award) - Earth Truth, 1984: Carlby Barry International Film Festival - Best Actor Earth Truth, 1997: Brussels International Film Festival - Best Actor My Son the Fastistic.

1990: Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, 1997: Grand Prix special des Americas Montreal World Film Festival - for exceptional contributions to filmmaking.
2004: Order of Honorary Officer of the British Empire - for service to the British film industry.

2009: Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award
2015: Lifetime Achievement Award Prayag International Film Festival etc.
Besides, Om Puri has received numerous nominations in his life.

Today is the death anniversary of Om Puri, one of the most powerful actors in Indian cinema. Today I pay my respects to him.
