Have you ever wintered in the country?

When there is a country house with a wood-burning stove, such a pastime becomes a real pleasure for me. The village is empty, because all the summer residents have gone to the cities for Central heating. The feeling that you are one on one with the world and so I like to live most of all. But this is not often possible. During my last winter stay, my departing neighbors, when they found out that I wanted to stay until spring, asked me to look after their dog, which they didn't want to take with them. They left the keys to their house, where they prepared a large supply of food for her and left.

Когда есть загородный дом с дровяной печью, то такое времяпровождение для меня становится истинным удовольствием. Деревня пуста, потому что все летние жители разъехались по городам к центральному отоплению. Ощущение, что ты один на один с миром и так мне жить нравится больше всего. Но, жаль, удаётся это не часто. В мою последнюю зимовку, уезжающие соседи, узнав о моём желании остаться до весны, попросили присмотреть за их собакой, которую они не хотели брать с собой. Оставили ключи от своего дома, где приготовили большой запас еды для неё и спокойно уехали в свою Москву.

У нас тогда был серьёзный сиамский кот, Кисима, который тоже не хотел уезжать в город. Но подружится ли он с чужой собакой, которая жила на другом конце деревни, было не известно.

So we decided not to take the dog immediately, although it would be more convenient for us, but to leave it on a leash near her house and visit more often, and gradually introduce her to our house and cat on walks.
We took a lot of walks with the dog around the neighborhood, built snow houses on the frozen river, where the cat came later. But he never went for a walk with us, although, before the appearance of the dog, he was very fond of walking together.

Поэтому решили к себе собаку сразу не брать, хотя нам так было бы удобнее, а оставить на привязи около её дома и почаще проведывать, а на прогулках постепенно знакомить со своим домом и котом. Мы много гуляли с ним по окрестностям, строили на замёрзшей реке снежные домики, куда потом приходил и кот. Но вместе с нами он никогда не гулял, хотя и очень любил раньше всюду следовать за мной.

Kishima always sniffed me after walking the dog and was very displeased, although he did not show much jealousy because of the innate wisdom inherited from his grandmother.

Кисима всегда меня обнюхивал после прогулок с собакой и был очень недоволен, хотя особой ревности и не проявлял по причине врождённой мудрости, доставшейся ему от его бабушки.

Once the dog ran away somewhere, breaking loose at night. But so much snow had fallen that it obscured all traces and it was impossible to determine the direction. The search also turned up nothing. He appeared five days later, barely alive, with a torn forehead and a bitten nose. From that day on, I stopped thinking about the cat's psyche and moved the dog to my house so that he would survive.

Однажды пёс куда-то сбежал, ночью сорвавшись с привязи. Но выпало так много снега, что скрыло все следы и направление определить было невозможно. Поиски тоже ничего не дали. Он появился сам через пять дней, чуть живой, с разорванным лбом и покусанным носом. С этого дня я перестала думать о психике кота и переселила пса к себе, что бы он выжил.

We treated him for a long time, the cat began to help than he could. Sometimes he even lay down with the dog next to him and so spent a lot of time. One day he brought her a mouse ). There are no photos, because there was no time for that.And the day came when the dog got stronger and started to leave the house. Then the cat started to go out the other door and did not approach the dog again.

Лечили его долго. Кот начал помогать, чем мог. Иногда он даже ложился с собакой рядом и так проводил немало времени. Однажды он принёс ей мышь ). Фотографий нет, потому что не до того нам было. И настал день, когда собака окрепла и начала выходить из дома. Тогда кот начал выходить в другую дверь и больше к собаке не подходил.

Soon spring came, the river overflowed and a different, warm life began, but the dog remained with us until the owners returned. It was a good school for all of us and we continue to remember this dog fondly.

Вскоре пришла весна, разлилась река и началась другая, тёплая жизнь, но собака до возвращения хозяев оставалась с нами. Это было хорошей школой для всех нас и мы продолжаем вспоминать этого пса с нежностью.
