Today, education and treatment of children in our homes and schools is done following established norms and laws, although years ago this would only have been a dream.

This is the case of Leonor, an eleven-year-old elementary school student, who was very excited that day as always to her school in the rural community where she lived. The teacher gave them a surprise evaluation where the majority knew how to respond. But she and a group of classmates did not have the same luck. Then Miss Juliana took them to the patio, it was a sunny day, the stones of the pavement gleamed warmed by the sun's rays and forced them to kneel on them as punishment for their ignorance. The moans and cries did not move at all to that cruel and improvised executioner. When they got up they saw their innocent knees with big blisters while they listened to the incessant scolding. From that bitter experience was only the pain and the "learning" never to stop memorizing the lesson. Today, at 75 years old Leonor does not stop remembering it.

Hoy en día, la educación y el trato hacia los niños en nuestros hogares y colegios se hace siguiendo normas y leyes establecidas, aunque años atrás esto sólo hubiese sido un sueño.

Es el caso de Leonor, una niña de once años estudiante de 4° Grado de primaria, quien muy emocionada fue ese día como siempre a su escuela en la comunidad rural donde vivía. La maestra les hizo una evaluación sorpresa donde la mayoría supo responder. Pero ella y un grupo de compañeros no tuvieron la misma suerte. Entonces la señorita Juliana los llevó al patio, era un día soleado, las piedras del pavimento relucían recalentadas por los rayos solares y los obligó a ponerse de rodillas sobre estas como castigo por su ignorancia. Los quejidos y llantos no conmovieron en lo absoluto a aquel cruel e improvisado verdugo. Al levantarse vieron sus inocentes rodillas con grandes ampollas mientras escuchaban los incesantes regaños. De aquella amarga experiencia sólo quedó el dolor y el “aprendizaje” de no dejar nunca de memorizar la lección. Hoy, a sus 75 años de edad Leonor no deja de recordarlo.

Aquella niña era mi madre y todo esto ocurrió en verdad.
