The Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States was dedicated in New York harbor by President Grover Cleveland on ThisDayInHistory in 1886. During the ceremony, the crowd interrupted by a full 15 minutes of applause before President Cleveland could begin a brief speech in which he proclaimed that “she holds aloft the light which illumines the way to man’s enfranchisement.”
