"Hundreds of years ago, in a little Italian town, a modest company owner owed a considerable sum of money to a loan shark. The loan shark was an elderly, unattractive man who happened to have a thing for the business owner's daughter.

He made the decision to offer the businessman a proposal that would wipe out the debt he owed him completely. But there was a catch: we would only forgive the loan if he married the businessman's daughter. This proposition was welcomed with a look of contempt, to say the least.

The loan shark stated that he would put two stones, one white and one black, into a bag.
After that, the daughter would have to reach into the bag and select a stone. The debt would be erased if it was black, but the loan shark would then marry her. If it was white, the debt would be forgiven as well, but the daughter would no longer be obligated to marry the loan shark.

The loan shark bent over and picked up two pebbles while standing on a pebble-strewn path in the businessman's garden. The daughter observed that he had picked up two black stones and placed them both in the bag when he was scooping them up.

He then instructed the daughter to select one from the bag.

The daughter had three options: she could have done nothing, she could have done something, or she could have done anything.

Refrain from removing a pebble from the bag.
Remove both pebbles from the bag and reveal the loan shark's deception.
Pick a pebble from the bag, fully aware that it was black, and sacrifice herself for the release of her father.
She took a stone from her bag and 'accidentally' dropped it among the other pebbles before glancing at it. 'Oh, how clumsy of me,' she murmured to the loan shark. 'Don't worry; if you look in the bag for the last one, you'll be able to see which pebble I chose.'

The pebble left in the bag is obviously black, and because the loan shark didn't want to be found out, he had to pretend that the pebble the daughter dropped was white in order to clear her father's debt
