It was an uphill battle for Simon Inzaghi's men, because to come back from two goals down in the first leg at Anfield Road in England to be able to hope for extra time and penalties was no easy task. And it wasn't.
Liverpool resisted in an orderly fashion until midway through the second half when Argentine Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring. But Alexis Sanchez's dismissal just a minute later made it all but impossible. From then on it was a siege that the English side were able to control with some effort.
In the first leg Jurgen Klopp's side had done a great job in Milan when they ran out 2-0 winners. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino had set them up nicely to close out the series in their favour at home.
Liverpool dominated the rest of the game through possession, neutralising Inter's pressure. Klopp's side are through to the quarter-finals and await the draw on 18 March when UEFA will announce their next opponents.
