I'd written this post this morning but it seems to have disappeared so apologies if it pops up again and it looks like I've posted it twice. Because I have. I've also written it twice so it'll be some kind of miracle if the content's identical.
As I type this, Comoros are playing Cameroon in the Round of 16 at the African Cup of Nations. What makes this somewhat remarkable is that Comoros are ranked 132nd in the world and knocked out 52nd rank Ghana to reach this stage.
My African geography can probably be summarised by knowing that Sierra Leone sits on the West Coast (having run a marathon there many years ago) and South Africa's at the bottom somewhere. So I had to look up where Comoros is...
But this post wasn't written to be a Geography lesson (although this knowledge will come in helpful on pointless), this post was written for the "amusing" situation Comoros find themselves in going into tonight's game.
It's fairly rare for a football team to put an outfield player in goal and I can think of a handful of times that this has happened (in professional football anyway). In Comoros' game against Ghana, their goalkeeper got injured and to compound matters, their other 2 goalkeepers have tested positive for Covid and so they have to play tonight's match with an outfield player in goal. That's a big ask. Not helped by somebody getting sent off after 7 minutes.
Remarkably, they're nearly half an hour in and it's still 0-0 so good luck Comoros... you're going to need it.
