When COVID-19 shut down my gym, I felt a mix of anger and frustration. I had just made my way back, and was training hard. I showed up at 330am, and the gym was shut down. This was in March. I reached out to my fitness network and began training with others. Here is what I needed as an athlete:
I needed accountability. I needed to show up, lift and run and a fitness partner helpes with that. Just showing up to do exercise can help.
I needed someone to train with. Fitness and athletics should be a social event. I played basketball and football with friends. I trained with others and it was beneficial to be plugged into a social network in real life. Zoom just doesn't cut it.
I needed a positive fitness presence in a dark time. Fitness raises the mood and staves off depression. It was necessary to pursue this during the bad news in the media.
I needed to just focus on athletic performance. The world was plunging into darkness, and this was a needed distraction.
The gym is back open, and I am heading back next week. The athletic endeavors I pursued during the lockdown were instrumental to overcoming our national downturn.
