COVID-19 has impacted everything we do, and sports and athletics are no exception. What is an athete to do after infection and recovery?
With the concern about long-term effects of COVID-19 infection, particularly in regards to the heart and lungs, it is key to see a physician after COVID-19 recovery for a physical assessment before returning to your sport.
Long-term effects of COVID-19 may eventually subside as the body heals. Proper rest and nutrition are paramount to your recovery. Make sure to avoid junk food and focus on rebuilding your nutritional base with fish high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 and fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C.
As an active gym member and runner, another point to consider is to not overdo it when returning from a long hiatus from athletics. Your joints and tendons are particularly vulnerable due to long periods of rest and under-use. Make sure to ease back into your routine, and stretch even more than you have before. Focus on a pre and post-workout stretching session.
As an athlete, COVID-19 is a stumbling block that is akin to an injury. Focus on diet, exercise, stretching and taking your time to ease back into the swing of things. Consult your doctor before making any changes.
