Lionel Messi has been ruled out of Argentina's first World Cup qualifier since the ban expired, said Claudio Tapia, the country's football chief.
Messi was banned for one match after seeing a red card against Chile in the third place match of the Copa America last year.
The idea was that the record-breaking six-time Footballer of the Year would not be able to play against Ecuador next month.
However, according to the Argentine Football Association, the head of the organization, Tapia, has spoken to Conmebol president Alejandro Domingos about the matter. Messi, who has confirmed that a year has passed since the ban was imposed, is no longer barred from playing against Ecuador.
According to the preliminary schedule, the World Cup qualifiers in the Latin American region were scheduled to start last March. But the coronavirus outbreak is set to begin twice in October.
