I thought with the new management at work, Chelsea would go all out to impress in the transfer market since the new owner will want to make a statement. I understand they did a bit of business which is not bad at all but I was expecting it to lift the mood rather than making them average.
The mood in Chelsea's camp is different than it was last season. They were resilient, tough and always squeeze out results but they are now a shadow of themselves and I still don't know what's wrong.
I knew Sterling wasn't the answer after I heard they rejected the chance to sign Ronaldo. I like Sterling and I enjoy his style and skill on the ball but he is too wasteful for me. Guardiola isn't dumb and he let him go for reasons best known to him. I saw the evidence of this when he was one on one with the goalkeeper when Chelsea played with Southampton. He had the chance to give the pass to a player in better position but he took too long on the ball. It was shortly after that he scored. There is a bit of selfishness to his play.
He managed to score the opening goal for Chelsea but I don't see him as the answer. A lot of creativity is missing for Chelsea in midfield. They lack a figure up front too that can lead the team. I don't think Sterling is the solution to their striker problem and I can't understand why Loftus Cheeks keep starting every game for them.
The presence at the back is missing too even though Thiago Silva is doing his best but let's face the truth, age is no longer on his side. Koulibaly is not Rudiger. I've seen Rudiger take some risks and burst forward to take shots and attempts strikers wouldn't try but Koulibaly is a bit too laid back for me. He has the physique and the presence but he is lacking in the substance. I won't judge him too much because he is still new to the Premier League and the team but it's one of the reasons they are still conceding at the back while lacking as much presence at the front too.
The way he got bullied and bundled by Adams says a lot. I don't understand why a lot isn't being said regarding that when almost everyone 'killed' Martinez when he played his first full game with Manchester United. Koulibaly also need to do better and show more grit at the back and during set pieces.
Thomas Tuchel can't do so much without a recognized striker especially knowing Chelsea's pattern has always been with playing with a striker. Timo Werner scored hattrick in Germany and this further increased the frustration of so many fans but the guy didn't really cut it with this Chelsea team so why are the fans getting angry because he was sold? When he was sold, they were all happy and now because of just one game which he scored hattrick, they wished he stayed? We all know Timo Werner is a good link up player but a terrible finisher. Chelsea needs a finisher and I still maintain that Sterling is not the answer. He will score goals, yes but he would waste as much goals as he would score.
The transfer window is almost closing and Chelsea signed Fofana. It is a good business and I won't focus on the price tag. I hope they would use the same energy and intensity to get a recognized striker if they don't want to struggle in the league before the next transfer window.
Cheers.
