The final group stage games have just been completed and I’m sure there were some persons that wanted to see Real Madrid make history by dropping into the Europa League for the first time ever. It wasn’t going to happen, at least this season and not when they are playing at home. Things looked really bad for Real Madrid in the early parts of the group stage and for some reason, they found themselves in the mix of dropping into the Europa League which was a surprise to many as prior to the first group stage game, Real Madrid were tipped to finish in the top 2 comfortably.

Similar to the Man United game yesterday which saw Man United crash out of the champions league, Real Madrid was also in a pretty similar situation as it was a do or die affair for them, a win was needed to secure the next round. Had Real Madrid not won at home yesterday, they would have made history by playing in the Europa League for the first time. For a biggest brand in football, this was something they didn’t want to happen and hence they showed up to get the desired result to finish top of the group.

This was a nervy match for a lot of the Real Madrid fans and being the most prestigious and valuable brand in club football, it was impossible to imagine them playing in the Europa League. Not that the Europa league isn’t good or something, but a club like Real Madrid need to be in the champions league and should always be able to progress from the group stage. Borussia Monchengladbach made a name for themselves in the competition so far with big wins to hold top position for a while… going into this game, many expected them to give Madrid a hard time at the Santiago or possibly be the team to send them to the Europa League. However, it wasn’t the case as Real Madrid proved too strong for them as got a deserved and solid win at home to not only make it through to the next round, but also finish top of the group.

The match started and from the first minute, you could see that Real Madrid wanted to win the game. Their efforts paid off very early in the game as Karim Benzema put them in front with a beautifully placed header that saw the goalkeeper watch it all the way into the net. Karim Benzema again on the scoresheet to double the lead for Real Madrid and give them the cushion on the 31st minute. At the end, it was a very good win for Real Madrid. Great news for the Real Madrid fans as they now prepare for their upcoming league game.
