The El Clasico is one of the biggest rivalries in football. It is FC Barcelona against Real Madrid. On Saturday Real Madrid beat FC Barcelona but 3 goals to 1. It wasn't Barcelona's best game if you ask me. But anyway.
Here's 10 things you need to know to get up to speed on the El Clasico.

  1. First Game
Well while the term "El Clasico" is quite new, the first ever Barca Madrid game was back in 1902. It was a friendly match though, whereas the first Laliga El Clasico took place in 1929 where Madrid took the win.

  2. Total Clasicos
There have been 245 Clasicos so far. With Barca winning 96 of them and after Madrid's win on Saturday it takes them to 97 win's. Who will reach 100 wins first? Comment below.

  3. Most Appearances
The player with the most El Clasico appearances is Sergio Ramos(Real Madrid) with 45 appearances, but Lionel Messi(FC Barcelona) is close behind him with 44 appearances.
NOTE the these stats are of 26/10/2020

  2. Most Common Result
Madrid-Barca Barca-Madrid are always tough games and the most repeated result is proof of it. In fact 2-1 is the most common result in Clasicos. Out of the 245 Clasicos played, 43 have ended up 2-1. That's 18%, which means that 1 out of 5 end up 2-1.

  3. El Clasico Breakdown
Most Clasicos have been Laliga games of course, but there have been 62 times where Barca and Madrid have faced each other in other competitons 34 times in the Copa del Rey, 14 in the Spanish Cup and 8 times in the Champions League. Also there were 6 Clasicos played in the Copa de Laliga(a competition that doesn't exist anymore).

  4. Clasico! Clasico! Clasico!
Adding all competitions together, Barca and Madrid could face each other a maximum of 8 times per season. But the record of Clasicos held in 1 season is season 2011/2012, 2012/2013. With both having had 6 Clasicos in a single season. In that season they met twice in Laliga, twice in Copa del Rey and twice in the Spanish Cup.

  5. The Miami Clasico
There has only been 1 Clasico played outside the Spanish borders, that was during Barca's 2017 summer tour, where Barca and Madrid faced each other in a unique Clasico held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

  6. Media Coverage
El Clasico drew so much attention that about 800 journalists came to Camp Nou to attend the game, plus almost 100 of them came from international media.

  7. Why 'El Clasico'?
Do you know where the term El Clasico comes from? The term was adopted in the beginning 90's when the press started calling it 'El Clasico' with the influence of Boca Juniors vs Riverplate being called Super Clasico. Before that Barca-Madrid was only called the Spanish derby.
