Greetings, my dear readers. I continue to work with dedication on the land, in this project that I have and have been developing for a long time 8 little by little, because the situation here in my country is not the most favorable) but we are fighting to continue. A month ago I prepared the land, investing money and a good amount of effort in it, it seemed that the rains were the announcement of winter somewhat early, but no, I prepared it because after another great effort I had brought the water from the communal pump to my lands, but as usual here we have to fight against a thousand things, when you solve one, 10 new ones come out, haha, the fuel supply is almost completely stopped and makes it impossible to find, at least not at a price that can be paid, for us peasants. Although a week ago the ministry has counted us to see if they send us some diesel fuel, which is what we need, but the investment and time has been lost, but I get up and back to the fight, as you can see I'm preparing the land, through thick and thin, as the saying goes, haha. A good part of the land has a weed that is called Gamelote around here, and it is very difficult to remove only with the harrow, and this time I decided to remove it by the roots, that is equivalent to a few days giving it hard to beak and lung, and for Now I can only pay a single worker for the task, to help me (the price of the Hive is very low, I pray that it goes up, besides that the land occupies a lot of my time and I have not performed here in the work that is where we survived, thanks to the Hive) But hey, nothing is impossible and this time I need to sow all the land to try to produce a lot of grain, something that is so much needed here in my country, not only for me, but for food, so The national government has problems with other governments, we people are not to blame for their personal problems, and we are really tired of taking blows from everyone, and they winning because those who lose the most are the people who have lived through all this because of political problems, but it is better aside (as always) all those royos because the truth is that nobody cares, so we must fight to survive.

In this area I have planted some Cherry tomatoes, a small tomato, but with an exquisite flavor, magnificent for preparing sauces, it fascinates me with pasta. In salad it is also tasty, because it provides that peculiar flavor that characterizes it. This was a seed that I brought to the area and I am happy to see that it has multiplied, and a good number of farmers already have this type of tomato in the area, so much so that I lost my seeds, because some mice pierced the bag where I stored and they ate it all, but a neighbor to whom I gave seed and it has returned to me. Do you see why it is good to share?

The banana plants are already halfway there, and I have been able to maintain them, watering them from the creek that is about 300 meters away, but that to load so many tubes, is not an easy task at all, but forwards it is that the horse is going, as my grandfather used to say, the peasant must resolve whatever it takes and work harder every day, because we are the food of the peoples.

I sowed about 20 squash plants ahead, and in a month I will sow about 30 more, to cover the quota of this species in the plot, not to lose the seed and get the estimated amount that I have in my project, since I want to cultivate in a balanced, with everything and that this time I will plant a lot of corn, something that was not my estimate, but since I have not been able to buy the grafted plants of: avocados, orange, mandarin and lemon trees, I must make the most of the land, to produce the largest amount of possible food and try to make some profit and recover some of the money that I have invested, at least to be able to buy many of the things that I need and to be able to make the project efficient, I need: a diesel pump to water from the stream before any problem with the main pump. about 500 meters of guayas to extend the lines to my lands. buy the grafted plants that I mentioned before and other things.

I planted some passion fruit plants, here we say the indigenous name, Parchitas, just a few, to have that item in my home, and play with them.

I have also planted some coffee bushes, one that is already adapted to the area and that has been lost over time (Venezuela was once a great producer of coffee and one of the best in the world) this species gives an exquisite coffee, as well that these plants that I have, they are my hope to get seeds and reproduce the species in the area, my idea is to populate the entire bank of the river, which is now a stream due to the size of most of the area near its basin, have coffee, people should take care of the big trees, so that they provide shade and this would benefit the Tucutunemo river and the ecosystem.

Since water, rain and soil health are concerns for you I would highly suggest you mulch the ground as heavily as possible. Use grass, weeds, and anything organic you can cut down to put over the top of the ground.

This will help you in a lot of ways:

  1. Keep the sun directly off the soil so it will stay cooler and more moist
  2. Holds water in, it keeps water where you need it rather than evaporating
  3. Fungus and beneficial bugs will break down this organic layer and create nutrients for the soil. They will also create networks for inter plant communication and nutrient pathways.
  4. Prevents erosion of the top soil from rain and wind. It keeps nutrients in the soil.
  5. Weed prevention.

Also consider growing a cover crop. One of the best I have found is sweet potato, not only will you get a crop from it but the plants that grow up higher than this will not be effected.

If you have anyone around who grinds up trees, or limbs from pruning the wood chips laid down about 6 inches deep is like magic. Each year you lay down more. You no longer need to turn your soil either. You just did down to black earth to plant again. It prevents weeds and make it so easy to pull out weeds that do come through.

sweet potato as ground cover and inter cropping.

Wood Chips used for mulching. I get these from our timber market where they plane boards. Usually they have these more course ones and then finer like sawdust. I like the more course ones as they are not as uniform and heavier to stick to the ground. They come from a lot of different types of trees which is good, but you should try to get wood chips that contain the leaves, branches, bark and all parts of the tree if possible.

Thanks for the information, this is excellent, yes, I have thought about these alternatives when seeing them on the internet, I am going to try some. The sweet potato fascinates me, but I have very little seed, and here you cannot move due to lack of fuel, so everything becomes much more difficult, but I will try to apply the techniques that you propose.

Sweet potato no seed needed if you can find some of the actual potato, just cut it up and put it in the ground. It seemed pretty drought resistant.

Do you have cassava (manouk)? It is very drought resistant, put it in the ground and dig it up a little less than a year later. You just need cuttings of another one.
