What is a bike break in period? Advice on break-in periods.

in blurtrides •  4 years ago

This is the time when the engine is brand new, especially the first few hundred or thousand (071000) km. During this time various parts of the engine such as piston rings, valves and cylinder bores are scratched, which has to be removed in a proper process. That's why the biker has to follow some rules at this time so that those parts of the engine are smooth and the bike can give proper mileage and service.

Be patient:

Usually when we buy new bikes we get very excited. But since the price of the bike is higher in our country than in the neighboring countries and we expect good mileage and long durability from the bike, we have to be patient till the break in period is over. You don't have to ride a bike out of emotion, you have to follow the rules. Otherwise, the engine of the beloved bike will be damaged.

The break-in of the cylinder in the first figure was not proper and the break-in of the second was as per the rules. (Honda F3 Piston)

What to do during bike break in period?

All bikes in Bangladesh (Bajaj Pulsar, TVS Apache RTR, Hero CBZ, Yamaha FZS, Fazer) are mainly imported from India. So I will say the rules of engine brake in, which Indian bike manufacturers say to follow. There may be more or less a few km here, but at the end of the break in you will find a fuel efficient and long lasting engine.

  1. Anyone can cross the break-in period in two parts, first from 0 to 500 km and then from 501 to 1000 km.

  2. Do not start the engine at high rpm during break in.

  3. Turn on the engine and wait at least 1 minute.

  4. Change the engine oil for the first time as soon as possible (3008400 km). Also replace the oil filter. It's not that hard to change. Go to 1000 km for the second time and change the engine oil and oil filter. But for the first time a service center engineer could disagree about changing engine oil and filters so quickly, I saw it at TVS's service center.

  5. In the first 500 km of the break-in period, it is not advisable to cross 4500 rpm in any gear. Also, do not drive at low rpm in high gear, for example: 2000 rpm in 5th gear. This puts more pressure on the engine.

  6. Do not travel long distances on the highway during break-in.

  7. Don't ride a bike with too much weight (pillion), try to ride alone.

  8. In the second half of the break-in, that is, at 50061000 km, many bike manufacturers (Yamaha) can say that there is no problem even if it runs at 6000 rpm. But it would be wise not to exceed 4500 rpm. Moreover, it would not be right to ride a bike in the same RPM for a long time.

  9. You should stop for a while after running for 30 minutes or 30 km continuously. This will allow the bike's engine to cool down.

  10. It is not right to pick up too much acceleration during the break-in period.

  11. Use only mineral engine oil to change engine oil during break-in period. Avoid synthetic engine wells at this time.

  12. At the end of the break in the bike should be raised to the maximum RPM.
You will benefit if you follow these rules during the break in of the motorcycle. Stay well and ride the bike carefully.
