Octane or petrol - which is the best fuel for a motorcycle? | Part-02

Leaded or lead-free and why

The answer to the above question is not urgent for the general gasoline user bikers of our country and it can be explained in detail in any other discussion (maybe any discussion on fuel booster). However, for interested readers, a few words will be discussed here. Lead is the best booster at low cost, which can greatly increase the efficiency of gasoline. And its RON can be easily increased by mixing lead with gasoline. So in the beginning, lead was always used to increase fuel efficiency. Yet in many racing cars, aircraft fuel, and in a few countries lead is mixed with gasoline [in addition to lead, nitrous oxide (NOS) can be used to increase engine power in the short term].

But lead is harmful to the environment and the human body in the long run. That is why we should avoid using lead in our fuel. Moreover, there is nothing to be disappointed with lead-free gasoline. Even lead-free modern gasoline can ensure the maximum power of your bike or car. If you want, you can use any additive other than lead with fuel, if it is effective and readily available in Bangladesh. However, your bike also needs to be high-powered.

RON (Research Octane Number)

RON plays an important role in determining the concentration of gasoline. With the improvement of the gasoline engine, various additives and boosters are used along with the gasoline used as fuel to increase its efficiency, thus increasing the efficiency of the gasoline. And for this purpose lead is the most effective booster, which when mixed with gasoline increases its effectiveness to the maximum extent.

But later, when lead poisoning was detected, researchers began looking for new types of boosters. And at one point they found ethanol, methanol, toluene and other additives as lead alternatives, which are cheaper in price but less effective than lead. Of course, these boosters can also increase the efficiency of gasoline and they are not so harmful to the environment. However, eventually ethanol and a few other additives were nominated internationally to increase the effectiveness of gasoline. In addition, the efficiency of gasoline is determined based on the efficiency of the fuel and the level of mixed additives. And this criterion is called octane number or RON (Research octane number).

Fuel movie of Bangladesh

According to international policy, all fuel dispensers at fuel pumps must have RON numbers, so that people know what quality of fuel they are spending on. This is because the fuel pump contains multiple quality gasoline, which has a yellow RON sticker on it, which mentions RON 7, RON 91 or Octane 8, Octane 91, etc. But we do not see any such sticker in any fuel pump in Bangladesh. As a result, we do not even know what quality or RON number of gasoline we are buying from the pump. However, even if we do not know the RON number, we usually use two types or two RON numbers of gasoline. These are commonly known to us as octane and petrol. Now let's see what is the RON number of our gasoline (both octane and petrol).

As mentioned earlier, the minimum internationally recognized RON value is RN7 and it can be up to a maximum RN91. As he assumes, the RON of our petrol is at least 8 and the octane may be 8 or more. But I searched, our petrol RON is only 70! And RON 95 of octane. In addition, I have received some more documents to suggest to the Ministry to increase the price of petrol from RON 70 to 8 before raising it. In a situation where most of our bikers do not know what quality of gasoline they are using, there is a very common question 'Which of petrol and octane will they use and why?' And I'll add, 'Which one for which bike?'

Octane or petrol — which one should I use?

If you are in doubt about octane or petrol, then this article is for you. Even if the petrol RON you use is at least 8, you no longer need to use high power fuel. But the reality is, the RON of petrol in our country is still 80! It is lower than internationally recognized standards. Which means, this petrol bike is unusable! But that is not the reality. Do most bikers in our country use high quality bikes? The answer is no. Most of us use single cylinder, single piston, two valve and less than 9: 1 compression ratio bikes below 150 cc. Most of these bikes do not have increased engine performance.

Moreover, there are still plenty of 2-stroke bikes in the country. That's why we have RON 70 petrol for these low power 4-stroke bikes. On the other hand, 2-stroke bikes do not require much RON (I also accidentally drove my Honda H100S CDI with kerosene several times). Whether adulterated has been mixed. In fact, in the rural areas of our country, even in Dhaka, kerosene or other adulterated masonota with petrol has become very common nowadays. As a result, we are not getting low RN petrol. And as a result of such adulterated petrol, the engine deteriorates quickly. The question that arises in such a situation is, is there any way to determine the purity of petrol? Yes, there is that way. I will discuss that later.
