Octane or petrol - which is the best fuel for a motorcycle? | Part-01

in blurtrides •  4 years ago

Hello riders, today we are going to talk about motorbike fuel, octane or petrol which is better for a motorcycle? Usually we use both fuels. And that is why I hope you will agree with me that today's discussion is important. Because the health of our pockets (!) And the performance of the bike are equally involved with this. Almost all motorcycles in our country are powered by petrol or octane.

Although the Army has some diesel-powered bikes, they are currently obsolete. And some electric motorbikes are also running in the country at present. However, today's discussion will be about petrol (basically gasoline) powered bikes. There are two types of petrol powered bikes: 2 stroke and 4 stroke. There are two types of bikes in our country. Both bikes use almost the same technology to produce energy by burning fuel, called sabotage engines. Here I will explain some technical issues, but energy will be at the center of my discussion and we will benefit more by using any fuel in the context of our country.

Our fuel (petrol and octane)

First we need to know what kind of fuel we are using and what its quality is. However, the problem is that the information in this regard is absolutely insufficient in Bangladesh. Most of our bikers do not know the actual information. However, usually we use petrol and octane on the bike. But in fact the names octane and petrol do not really make any difference. Internationally these two are called ‘gaselin’ and their chemical degradation is similar (C8H18). That means we can call it gasoline, petrol or octane by any name. In fact, octane / petrol / gasoline, whatever we call it internationally, is separated by a rating number, which is called an octane number or RON (Research Octane Number).

As such, international standard gasoline starts at octane number 6 (RON6) and can reach a maximum of 91, or even 102. Gasoline with different octane numbers but chemically the same substance. The difference is in some of the detergents and chemicals associated with them, which increase the combustion capacity of these fuels (increase the compression, expansion and reduction levels of the fuel). This results in smooth combustion of the cylinder using more octane numbered fuel (no knocking from pistons, valves or connecting rods). In this discussion I will use the term gasoline for both petrol and octane.

Fuel efficiency

Before we know about the need for quality energy, we need to know some basic things about how energy works. The mixture of gasoline with air is sent to the cylinder or combustion chamber. There the piston compresses the mixture and the spark plug ignites it. This causes the mixture to explode and the resulting gas pressure pushes the piston out of the cylinder. For this to work, the fuel must have the maximum contraction and expansion capacity, but it must be at a controlled level so that the combustion is smooth and controlled.

Otherwise, the combustion will not be under control and the ratio between the generated power and each cycle of the engine will not be equal. This will disrupt the normal functioning of the piston, connecting rod and valve and cause hiccups from the piston, knocking can be heard from the valve and connecting rod (this sound is called engine knocking). .

Leaded gasoline

Early gasoline engines were not very efficient. As a result, they ran on ordinary gasoline. But day by day the efficiency of gasoline engine continues to increase and smooth and controlled combustion is required to release the engine vibration and ensure fast speed. That is why it is necessary to increase the quality of gasoline to a controlled level. So research began on it and at one point researchers found that it had good results in using lead as a booster to increase the fuel efficiency of gasoline. Lead has been widely used to increase gasoline efficiency until the end of the 20th century because of its low cost and excellent booster. It was called lead gasoline. But because lead is harmful to the environment and the human body, lead mixing with gasoline was banned in the late 20th century.

Lead-free gasoline

Lead avoids lead as a gasoline booster to protect the environment and people from harmful effects, and instead the idea of using something else as a booster begins, so that even with that booster, lead from gasoline can have the same efficiency. So the researchers again started to add something other than lead to gasoline and it is called lead-free gasoline.
