From 1978 to 1980, Mercedes-Benz competed in long distance rallies around the world with the coupe version of the 107 series. The 450 SLC and the 450 SLC 5.0 celebrated prestigious victories, including the Bandama Rally through Western Africa's CUte d'lvoire in 1979 and 1980. For 1981, Mercedes-Benz planned on supplying driver Walter Ruhrl with the new 500 SL. To further improve the performance and handling, the car received an upgraded V8-light-alloy, producing 320 horsepower and over 310 lb ft, a shortened wheelbase, and a weight reduction of over 220 lbs.

With Mercedes-Benz abandoning its rally racing activities at the end of 1980, this remarkable 500 SL never got to prove itself in the 1981 world rally championship and was only used for test drives during the Bandama Rally in 1980 and later continued to be raced unofficially by the team of Scuderia Kassel, a motorsport minded Mercedes-Benz dealer, in the German Rally Championship in 1982/83.

The 500 SEC was produced in 1984 and 1985. Under the bonnet was powered by a five-liter V8 engine that produced just under 185 horsepower. The SEC was a two-door coupe with seating for five. Also in the 500 Series was the 500 SEL which was a four-door sedan also with seating for five. The cost of the SEC was $56,800 while the SEL cost $51,200. The 500 SEC was the most expensive Mercedes-Benz in 1984 and 1985. Standard equipment included an anti-theft alarm and outside temperature sensor. Anti-lock brakes became standard in 1985, along with heated outside mirrors and eclectically-adjustable headrests.
