The 135-year-old Birchandra Public Library in Comilla, commonly referred to as Comilla Town Hall, has been chosen by the local administration to be torn down in order to make way for a “modern” town hall, disregarding its importance as an archaeological heritage which carries with it century-old history, tradition, and culture.
The town hall stands witness to some of the most important events in the history of the emergence of independent Bangladesh, including the Language Movement in 1952 and the War of Liberation in 1971.
The remarkable monument has been graced by the presence of some of the most distinguished individuals in history including Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Mahatma Gandhi, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy and Dr Suniti Kumar Chatterjee.
