You see the Phaeton was the swan song for Volkwagen's boss, Ferdinand Piech. He was retiring, and he wanted t go out with a bang. He wanted to make the best car ever. He layed down a set of 10 regulations, which were apparently so impossible, that half of his engineers walked out. They said it couldn't be done.
But my God, were they wrong.
Let's start with that jewel of an engine first and formost. It was basically 2, 3.0 liter VR6 engines joined together to make 1 engine in the shape of a W. It was 6.0 liter W12. In this day and age it's quite common among wide range of Bentley's and few VW's. But back then it was new, innovative and hadn't been done before.
And then on the inside, it's loaded with all type's of creature comfort's such as heated and ventilated electric leather seats, wallnut wood dashboard, a dehumidifier, which was never seen in any car before, and a whole lot more features. It also has a 4motion four wheel drive system with an 8 speed automatic gearbox.
