Now when you think of Mazda, what comes to mind? Cheap, safe family cars, SUVs hatchbacks? You might think that they make rather boring cars. But in actual fact they used to make quite exciting, fun, fast, good sports cars. A typical example:
That is a Mazda RX-7. But not just any RX-7. That's the 2002 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R. Which is one of the rarest RX-7s in the world.
It was a special gift for Mazda's loyal customers. Only 1500 Spirit R's were made. And they all were sold only in Japan. But they made only 1 left and drive Spirit R, and it's the only one in existence. The only RX-7 Spirit R left hand drive in the world is in USA Mazda HeadQuarters, and was built for North America Senior VP Robert Davis.
Now lets talk about that engine. The RX-7's Twin-Turbo 1.3-liter Twin-Rotary engine(AKA the 13B-REW) was designed during the Japanese 276-HP pact that limited sports car's power levels. The horsepwer limit forced automakers to focus on the overall package, leading to sharper inputs and lighter weight, plus improved handling.
It produced, as you might have guessed 276 BHP. It had a 0-60 MPH time of 4.8 seconds, which was quite quick back then. And continue on to a top speed of 159 MPH. It weighed about 1270 kg which average for it back then. Now all of that combined gave it a 1/4 mile time of 13.3 seconds.
The RX-7 Spirit R Spec A features the most hardcore factory-installed parts available, at the time. It had a special titanium grey colour with exclusive red Recaro bucket seats. It also included rear seat delete, adjustable rear wing, forged BBS wheels, Bilstein shocks, and drilled brake rotors.
It truly was something special. But there's just a small problem if you would like to buy one. And when I say small I mean 50000 dollars. Yeah, that's steep. But it has rarity on its side. So this can be an investment for the future. But it's your choice not mine.
