Finding quality books for elementary aged children, especially boys, can be difficult. My household has found a winner with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. It is one of my third grade boy's favorite series. My youngest will devour the books, even giving up video game time to finish one of these delightful tales! It is difficult to hold his attention, but these books not only do that but capture his imagination. He just finished Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever by Jeff Kinney. It is the sixth installment of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. This is a very popular series in his school library.
In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever the main character, Greg Heffley, is trying to be good before Christmas, but bad decisions keep getting in the way. A series of choices makes him believe he has gone too far and will face big consequences. When the police come knocking, he is very afraid! A big turn in the story happens when the Heffley family gets snowed in by a blizzard! Greg Heffley spends the time stuck indoors worried about an incident at school, playing video games and dealing with his family.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are all in elementary school aged child friendly format. They each bring to light issues facing kids in this age range in a way that is not scary or overwhelming. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever, Greg faces bullies, guilt from making bad decisions and sibling rivalry issues. I know my two boys can relate to it all! Issues are faced with age appropriate humor. It is delightful to see my son sitting on the couch laughing out loud at the silly hi-jinks in the novel's pages. Simple illustrations dot the pages, adding extra interest to the pages.
