The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a 2019 film written, directed by and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, in his feature directorial debut. The film is based on the memoir of the same name written by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer.
Based on a true story, it tells how against all odds, a thirteen-year-old boy in Malawi invents an unconventional way to save his family and his village from famine.
Although it is a British production, the film alternates between English and the Chichewa language, the language used in Malawi where the director is from.
The film was screened for international public consideration after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019.
Thereafter it began streaming in most African territories through the Netflix platform.
It was shortlisted to represent the United Kingdom at the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film.
The plot is set in a small village in northern Malawi, southern Africa, in the early 2000s.
William Kamkwamba (who wrote the memoir on which the film is based) is a young student from a farming family who has a hobby of fixing electronic gadgets for friends and neighbors without compensation. They are all too poor to be able to pay.
At a certain point his parents can no longer afford the tuition and at the risk of not being able to attend classes, William blackmails his science teacher (who has discovered that he is having a secret affair with his sister) to intercede with the principal and allow him to attend school. His goal is to have free access to the library to continue learning about electrical engineering and energy production.
In his mind, the construction of a facility that would allow the village to survive the terrible droughts that affect it and prevent planting, since without moisture, the seeds cannot germinate and, when they do, the small seedlings are cooked by the hot sun, begins to take shape, albeit in a somewhat utopian way.
While William goes on with his school life, summer approaches and with it a prolonged drought that affects the crops of the whole area, causing the loss of harvests.
But above all the uncertainty of planting.
This causes popular unrest due to the rationing imposed by the government, William's family is deprived of their grain reserves and are forced to emigrate to avoid starvation.
Based on the knowledge acquired in the school library and his rudimentary practice of repairing electronic devices, William devises a plan to build a windmill to power an electric water pump. To that end, he builds a working prototype using everything within his reach. He even disassembles his old bicycle to use the spare parts.
His father (played by the same film's director Chiwetel Ejiofor) disagrees and they argue heatedly. But after the family dog, beloved by all, starves to death, he realizes that his son's idea is the only one that can save the town.
William and his father reconcile and, with the help of his friends and the remaining members of the village, begin to work on the project until they finally successfully build a windmill that will allow the planting of the harvest despite the scarcity of rainfall.

El niño que domó el viento es una película de 2019 escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por Chiwetel Ejiofor, en su debut como director de cine. La película está basada en las memorias del mismo nombre escritas por William Kamkwamba y Bryan Mealer.
Basada en una historia real cuenta como contra todo pronóstico, un niño de trece años de Malawi inventa una forma poco convencional de salvar a su familia y a su pueblo de la hambruna.
Aunque se trata de una producción británica, la película alterna el inglés con el Idioma chichewa, lengua utilizada en Malawi de donde es originario el director.
El film se proyectó a la consideración pública internacional después de haberse estrenado en el Festival de Cine de Sundance en el añ0 2019.

La trama se ambienta en un pequeño pueblo del norte de Malawi, en el sur de Africa, a principios de la década de 2000-
William Kamkwamba (quien escribió las memorias en las que se basa la película) es un joven estudiante de una familia de agricultores que tiene como hobby la pasión por arreglar artefactos electrónicos para amigos y vecinos sin recibir ninguna compensación encambio. Todos son demasiado pobres para poder pagar.
En un determinado momento sus padres no pueden seguir pagando la matrícula y ante el riesgo de no poder asistir a las clases William chantajea a su profesor de ciencias (el cuál ha descubierto que tiene un romance secreto con su hermana) para que interceda ante el director y le permita concurrir a la escuela. Su objetivo es tener libre acceso a la biblioteca para seguir aprendiendo sobre ingeniería eléctrica y producción de energía.
En su mente comienza a tomar forma, aunque en manera algo utópica, la construcción de una instalación que permita a la aldea de sobrevivir a las terribles sequías que la afectan y que impieden la siembra, ya que sin humedad, las semillas no alcanzan a germinar y, cuando lo hacen, las pequeñas plantitas son cocinadas por el sol ardiente.
Mientras William sigue con su vida escolar se aproxima el verano y con úl una prolongada sequía que afecta los cultivos de toda la zona produciendo la pérdida de las cosechas.
Pero por sobre todo la incertidumbre de la siembra.
Esto provoca disturbios populares por el racionamiento que impone el gobierno, la familia de William es despojada de sus reservas de grano y son obligados a emigrar para no morir de hambre.
Teniendo como base los conocimientos adquiridos en la biblioteca de la escuela y unidos a su práctica aunque rudimentaria de reparar aparatos electrónicos William idea un plan para construir un molino de viento que alimente una bomba de agua eléctrica. A tales efectos construye un prototipo funcional utilizando todos los elementos a su alcance. Incluso desmontar su vieja bicicleta para usar los repuestos.
Su padre (interpretado por el mismo director de la película Chiwetel Ejiofor) no está de acuerdo y discuten acaloradamente. Pero después que el perro de la familia, amado por todos, muere de hambre, se da cuenta que la idea de su hijo es la única que puede salvar al pueblo.
William y su padre se reconcilian y, con la ayuda de sus amigos y de los restantes miembros de la aldea comienzan a trabajar en el proyecto hasta que finalmente construyen con éxito un molino de viento que permitirá la siembra de la cosecha a pesar de la escasez de lluvias.
