CIA document on transcendental and out-of-body experiences

This is an interesting paper, written in 1983 for the US Department of Defense and released by the CIA in 2003. Thanks to @etainclub for the link.

The paper investigates the claims made by the Gateway Experience and the Hemi-Sync protocol, as developed by Robert Monroe and all still available at The Monroe Institute.

Note, firstly, that this is a military intelligence report. Why would the military be interested in out-of-body experiences? Indeed, as we shall see in future posts, why would the military be interested in any psychic experiences?

Communication and Information.

You should be interested too, as you are both receiving and transmitting information - without even knowing it.

Here I just wish to highlight a few points of interest; please read the paper for more details. Yes, I know it's some 40 years old, but knowledge has a history and research programs that get buried often leave a trail - imagine a chemtrail after the plane has gone. It is also instructive to see that even if a particular line of enquiry appears fruitless, the actual drive to seek certain knowledge remains and may change focus towards a more promising science.

Full Spectrum Control.

A human in a relaxed meditative state enters a psycho-physical resonant state with a frequency of around 7 Hz; this is also the borderline between alpha and theta brainwaves and also the primary Schumann frequency of the Earth. The paper talks about blood flow and how the brain itself oscillates but there is a level of confusion between sound and electromagnetic waves. The reason why the whole body can oscillate is that we are also electromagnetic systems and blood is a flow of charged particles that create the EM waves.

I can't immediately find the paper [Found it! see ref 6], so you'll just have to trust me, that the superposition of tones from stereo headphones using the Hemi-Sync method was not due to sound interference but actually the tiny EMF signals coming from the headphones. It was shown that replacing such headphones with air tube acoustic versions - thereby removing the oscillating magnet from near the ear - produced no effect. There was always a small theoretical problem with the beat-frequency superposition of sound waves in that it isn't clear exactly where in the brain that would take place. Anyway, that research was done long after this 1983 paper, but does resolve a few niggling issues. It does not, as some like to claim, invalidate the method, it actually makes the underlying theory a bit more robust.

So, let's get back to resonance. Now if our 7 Hz frequency is an electromagnetic wave, then a simple calculation would show that it would produce a wavelength about the circumference of the whole Earth! How can a body no longer than 2 metres produce a wave with a wavelength of some 40,000 km? The amazing thing is that this "carrier wave" is already there - the Schumann frequencies are generated by lightning pulses throughout the globe. What is happening is that higher frequency thoughts can add information to that carrier signal and it takes one-seventh of a second to transmit it across the planet.

Think about that.

The paper goes on to discuss the holographic theory of mind and then how the mind can possibly transcend its space-time limitations. But I think this has been enough of a mindwarp for now. Back with part two later.

It is good to know there is someone who has interests in this topic.
I not just have interests but researched on this for a while in scientific way, I would say. My interest was inducing lucid dreaming using several stimulation such as beat soud, tACS, and VR. Results of 1-year research were promising.

BTW, I did not know that beat sound is not actual source of effect (To my knowledge binaural beats are always generated when two sound waves are interferencing)
I need to check more about this.

Yeah that wiki page has the link to research I recall reading some years ago. makes sense coz where in the brain do the sound beats happen? I used to use binaural beats to wake me up in the morning - get psyched up ready to face the students! lol. That and basil essential oil :-)

There are biomagnetite crystals in the brain, but I'm not convinced sound itself will transmit through the skull and create any meaningful superposition in the brain - even with possible piezoelectric effects.
