"Hello," he said.
She let her guard down for a crack,
And through that crack came a bolt of lightning
Striking through her heart
As she looked into his eyes.
And the wax around it melted
under the heat of his stare
turning to liquid her frozen fear
of heartbreak if she should ever love again.
"Hello," he said.
And she heard, "Marry me."
And weak in the knee,
Lips trembling tremulously, she said, "Yes"
As her heart drummed against her chest.
And she thought he heard the pitter patter
Of her heart beat, her voice's tremor,
As his smiled widened and he stared at her.
Theirs was a chance encounter,
She, an introvert, he a handsome stranger
Who wore an artillery of smiles
As he leaned casually against a wall
Just outside the neighborhood mall while
She, lost in thought, bustled by.
She had known love once-
And her heart was sliced and served as fillet
By an uncaring lover who refused to pay
Her the slightest attention.
And when she had found the strength to reclaim
The tattered shreds of her heart,
She had guarded it obsessively,
Promising herself constantly
Never to love another,
That is, until she met the handsome stranger
Lounging outside the neighborhood mall,
A roguish smile, a twinkle in his eye as a called to her.
He said, "Hello", and she felt the ground shift,
And she was standing once again on a cliff, her heart held over a precipice.
He said, "Hello."
She heard, "Marry me."
And weak in the knee, lips trembling tremulously,
She said yes instantly.
My friends, do you believe in love at first sight? Do you think you can see someone for the very first time and know that he or she is the one? I do.
Now truth be told, falling for someone instantly is easy, maintaining love for years requires work, but I do believe that it is possible to see someone and form an instant connection.
Today, there's a tropical wave passing by my country and we are experiencing inclement weather. Earlier this afternoon, I was sitting outside my husband's office in the car, and I sent the window down a bit, just a crack, and wondered, what if lightning were to strike just through that single crack?
With the rain drizzling outside, I grabbed a pencil and a sheet of paper and began to doodle, and this poem was the result.
I hope you enjoyed it.
Thanks for your time and attention.
Loved it. And yes, love at first sight exists. A marriage of twenty years is my proof! I saw him and that was it, and like your protagonist, I had vowed to give up on love!
Funny thing, same here! 14 years and counting though, but it was love at first sight and it is love enduring, and I won't take back a minute of it.
That's awesome. Isn't it amazing? Like, how did we Know??
Thanks!
