We Are
Thinking I was born alone
When I arrive, they sing a hymnal tone
Grandma will be concerned about my life
Carrying me the child of my father’s wife
For months I suck from mum’s breast
When sleeping she keeps me on her nest
My cry make her rush to me
As I keep her all day’s schedule home
When I was born some songs were heard
Louder enough to ignite my cry from bed
But it is all an octave lullaby
That will often make me happy
As I grow up in our vicinity
I realize we are community
Someone said, is childhood initiation, be dare!
Since you are, therefore we are
I’m courageous to do the needful
Hence, it’s culturally fruitful
I was initiated into the family hood
Therefore we belong to the African Brotherhood
We care and concern for one another
We’re team of no individual order
Spread hands are the shoulders which I rise
Until my dreams through them is realize
