Foxglove (scientific name Argemone mexicana) is a prickly poppy (family Papaveraceae) that has spread from Mexico to the rest of the world as a weed. Its scientific name (Argymone mexicana) comes from the ancient Greek argima ("cataract" or "cataract").

The plant is named argymon because its sap was used to treat eye diseases, and mexicana because it is found in Mexico. It is both a poisonous weed and a medicinal herb.

The seeds of jackfruit look like mustard and the seed oil looks like mustard oil, so its adulteration is used in mustard. Poisoning may occur at adulteration levels of edible castor oil above 1%.

In 1977 there was an outbreak of its poisoning in Kolkata. In 1998, around 25,000 people in northern India were poisoned by adulterated cooking oil, and at least 65 people died.[1] Symptoms of this poisoning include water retention (dropsy) hence the name "epidemic dropsy".

Two of the toxic alkaloids present in sea buckthorn oil are sanguinarine and dihydrosanguinarine. Although it is not entirely clear how sanguinerine works exactly, this compound blocks the sodium-potassium-ATPase pump located in the cell membrane, much like digitalis or ouabain. This action, in small doses, increases the calcium in the cells, thereby increasing the contraction of the heart, and can act as a dropsy drug like digitalis.

For this reason, this plant was used as a medicinal plant. But if its level is high, the pores in the blood vessel wall become enlarged and the plasma is released into the intercellular space in large quantities and this itself causes dropsy.
