Walt Disney Company has opted to close Blue Sky Studios, the computer animation studio behind the "Ice Age" films, nearly two years after purchasing it as part of a broader acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets. After the shutdown takes effect in April, around 450 people will be laid off as a result of the decision.
Blue Sky was originally part of 20th Century Fox's animation department, but it became a part of Disney when the corporation acquired the majority of Fox's film and television production business in 2019. This includes access to the X-Men franchise, which may soon become culturally relevant, as well as Blue Sky Studios. Disney will acquire all of Blue Sky's characters and intellectual property, including its most successful series, Ice Age and Rio. According to Deadline, a Disney Plus program starring Ice Age characters is in the works.
