In the Catholic tradition, the color element in the liturgy becomes a symbol or sign of ecclesiastical events.
Generally, there are three liturgical colors commonly used, namely, white, green and purple. Purple is the liturgical color during Lent.
The purple color will be seen from the clothes of the priest (stole and chapel), acolytes, deacons and prodeacons as well as other mass officials.
In the liturgy, purple is used during times of introspection, a time of need for calm. Quoted from The Catholic page, the purple color worn one week before Easter is closely related to the passion and death of Jesus. It is said the soldiers dressed Jesus in purple robes and a crown of woven thorns.
Not only during Lent, purple is also worn on different occasions. Quoting from Sesawi, purple is worn during Advent, daily worship and funeral services.
Then, later on Palm Sunday and Good Friday the color red is used. Red means love and suffering. New at Easter celebrations, the church uses the white liturgical color.
Are people obliged to adjust their clothes during worship to the colors of the church liturgy?
Turns out the answer is no. In the General Guidelines for the Missal Romanum 335 it is stated:
"The Church is the body of Christ. In that Body not all members carry out the same duties. In the celebration of the Eucharist these different duties are expressed through different liturgical garments. So, the dress should indicate the special duties of each minister. In addition, the liturgical dress also adds to the beauty of the liturgical celebration. The liturgical dress for priests, deacons and lay servants should be blessed."
