Aceh province is known as an area that is very dense with Islamic nuances. Malay culture and customs will also be felt if you visit the region located at the tip of the island of Sumatra. No wonder, if you find many mosques with various architectural styles that are undeniably beautiful. One of them is the Great Mosque of Meulaboh.
Meulaboh Grand Mosque is a mosque located in West Aceh with beautiful architecture that combines Aceh, Middle Eastern and Asian styles. This mosque is one of the pride mosques of the people of Aceh, Indonesia. In fact, this mosque is included in the category of 100 Most Beautiful Mosques in Indonesia, namely the book of Teddy Tjokrosaputro and Aryananda.
Administratively, great mosque Meulaboh is located at Jalan Imam Bonjol 100, Desa Seuneubok, Kec. Johan Pahlawan, Meulaboh City, Regency West Aceh, Aceh Province. To get to this location, visitors need to travel at least 3 kilometers from the center of Meulaboh Town. The location of the mosque in the middle of Meulaboh City, makes it easy for pilgrims who want to worship or enjoy the splendor of this mosque building.
Upon entering the gates of the mosque, visitors will be immediately greeted by a magnificent mosque with a large red brick dome. The shady atmosphere in the courtyard of the mosque will also make anyone feel comfortable lingering in this mosque. This mosque is a gathering place for the congregation, especially the Meulaboh community.
If viewed from a historical point of view, the construction of this mosque first emerged from Malik Ridwan Badai, SH who was then the regent of West Aceh Regency. Assisted by local community leaders, the government planned a development milestone consisting of 3 areas. First in the field of education which is the forerunner of Teuku Umar University, in the social and religious fields as well as in sports.
Construction began in 1987 marked by the laying of the first stone. Initially, the Meulaboh Grand Mosque was planned to use a design similar to the Taj Mahal which is dominated by white. However, the plan was not implemented, the design is more modern by following existing trends.
The mosque, which is the pride of the people of Aceh, especially Meulaboh, has a building area of about 3,500 square meters, and is built on 5.2 hectares of land. The mosque can accommodate up to 7,000 worshipers directly. The inauguration of the Meulaboh Grand Mosque itself was held on 1 June 1999.
In choosing the name itself, several ideas emerged as other names for this mosque. Some of the names suggested are, Darussalam, Al Huryah, Al Achsan, Al Hilal and many more. But in fact, out of the several names proposed, not a single name was chosen to be the name of this mosque.
Finally in 2008, with the Regent's Decree and the approval of the West Aceh General Consultative Council, it was confirmed that the name of this mosque was Baitul Makmur Grand Mosque. However, some people still call this mosque as the Great Mosque of Meulaboh.
The Great Mosque of Meulaboh was also a silent witness to the greatness of the tsunami that hit Aceh in December 2004. Thousands of residents fled to this mosque because their homes were destroyed by the tsunami. The mosque is also a place to distribute aid using helicopters that can land in the mosque compound.
The mosque has 2 floors that have different architectural designs. From outside the mosque, you will clearly see the three main domes of the mosque, which are accompanied by the two domes of the water tower on the right and left. All the domes have the same color and the same color which is brick red. The shape of the head of this dome is round with a tapered top.
However, the size of the main dome and the water tower dome are different, the main dome has a larger size than the water tower dome. Its design is a combination of typical Asian and Middle Eastern architectural styles.
The charm of the Meulaboh Grand Mosque will be more felt when entering the interior of the mosque. You will see two rooms with different design concepts. In the first room, visitors will see a room filled with pillars. These pillars are the support pillars for the second floor of the mosque building.
While in the second room, you will feel a different atmosphere from the large, bufferless room equipped with decorative lighting in the middle. A typical Middle Eastern style can also be found when looking at the shape of the mihrab which is dominated by a golden brown color. In addition, the walls and pillars of the mosque are also decorated with ornaments and carvings that represent the typical architectural style of Aceh.
