Kinsol Trestle

Visited Kinsol Trestle on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada today. It's a mostly wooden bridge that is supported the whole way from top to bottom by wooden beams and some steel. It used to be for a train to cross the river valley but no trains run on Vancouver Island anymore as far as I understand. In 2011 trains stopped but there are talks about renovation of line from Victoria to Courtenay on the East and most populous side of the island. We saw plenty of people walk, run and cycle today on the trail to the trestle and across the trestle itself. Many came for the view but there are locals around also. The location is around 50 minutes drive from Victoria and most of the trip is on a major road, trans Canada highway but as you get closer the road is more windy and narrow. Parking is good and there are portable toilet facilities available. We parked at a car park around 1 km walk on a wide path with trees on both sides. The walk was nice and as the trees were several metres away it felt like we'd be able to see and hear a bear if there was one nearby. The highlight was the trestle itself and the view of it from both sides and views across the valley as well. Stunning and unlike anything I've seen before. Definitely would recommend it.

My rating: 9/10
