Orchid is one species of flower that is very famous among lovers of ornamental plants. The beauty of orchids and fragrance makes orchids much sought after by ornamental plant lovers, because of it some species of orchid flowers become scarce. One of them is the Black Orchid, this flower became the mascot of the flora of East Kalimantan Province and includes plants that are protected and preserved in the Nature Preserve Kersik Luway in West Kutai Regency. Kersik Luway is from the Dayak tribe words which mean Lonely Sand. The Kersik Luway nature preserve is about 360 kilometers from the city of Samarinda or about 8 hours drive by car. To go to the Kersik Luway nature preserve from Samarinda can only be reached by using a small plane type Twin Otter with the destination to the city of Sendawar (capital of West Kutai), from Sendawar continued by land with a distance of about 25 kilometers.
Although this ornamental plant is called by the name of Black Orchid, but not all of the flowers are black. The flowers are only on the tongue colored black with interspersed with green and hairy stripes and spread a very fragrant smell. Black Orchid bloom every month and the flowers can last up to a week. This plant in its natural habitat in Kalimantan began to be threatened with scarcity, due to the increasing number of people who opened up new land by cutting down trees in the surrounding forest area. In addition to the forest nature reserve Kersik Luway fire has also happened, which is the result of this fire that previously there are 75 species of orchids, after the fire only 57 species of orchids.
