2024 was a learning year, But how about 2025??

As 2024 draws to a close, I can’t help but look back on what has been one of the hardest years of my life. Living in London, a city full of opportunities but with equally overwhelming challenges, has been a rollercoaster. It’s a place where dreams meet reality, and sometimes that reality is harsh—especially when it comes to the cost of living.

The Cost of Living in London: A Daily Struggle

London is incredible in so many ways. It’s vibrant, diverse, and offers something for everyone. But it’s also one of the most expensive cities in the world. Rent alone can eat up most of your income, and then there’s food, transport, and everything else. You find yourself constantly balancing needs and wants, making sacrifices, and wondering if the struggle is worth it. But what I’ve learned is that every challenge teaches you something. For me, it has been about resilience and finding joy in the small victories.

Adapting to London’s Weather: From Sunny Nigeria to Gloomy Skies

For someone like me, who grew up in Nigeria’s warm, tropical climate, adjusting to London’s weather has been an entirely different challenge. Back home, the year is split into rainy and dry seasons, but the warmth is almost always constant. Here, the winters are long, dark, and freezing, and even the summers can feel underwhelming.

The grey skies and chilly winds can take a toll, both physically and emotionally. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is real, and it’s something I never fully understood until I experienced it myself. The lack of sunlight during the winter months can drain your energy and mood. Sometimes, I’d sit by the window on rare sunny days just to feel some warmth on my face.

But even in this, I’ve learned to adapt. Layering up, investing in a good winter coat, and finding cozy indoor spaces have made a difference. Slowly but surely, I’m learning to embrace the unpredictability of London weather.

Goals for 2025: A Fresh Start

Despite the struggles of 2024, I’m entering 2025 with hope and excitement. I’ve decided that this year will be about finding balance, exploring opportunities, and enjoying life more.

Exploring New Opportunities: London has so much to offer if you’re willing to look. This year, I want to focus on finding opportunities that align with my skills and passions—whether that’s professionally or personally. I want to say “yes” to things that scare me and take steps toward building a fulfilling career.

Becoming a Tourist in My Own City: One of my goals is to finally explore London like a true tourist. The British Museum, Tower Bridge(visited) , Buckingham Palace(visited), and even quieter spots like Kew Gardens are all on my list. I’ve spent so much time working and worrying that I’ve missed out on the beauty of this city.

Building Connections: Living far from home can feel lonely, and I’ve realized the importance of having a community. This year, I want to connect with more people—whether it’s joining a group, attending events, or simply reaching out to those around me.

Embracing the Weather: While I can’t change London’s weather, I can change how I deal with it. I’ll focus on finding joy in the colder months, whether it’s enjoying a hot cup of tea, reading indoors, or exploring winter markets.

Reflecting on the Journey

2024 wasn’t easy, but it was a year that taught me so much about myself. I learned to appreciate life’s little joys, to adapt when things feel overwhelming, and to keep moving forward even when the path isn’t clear.

As I step into 2025, I’m determined to make it a year of discovery, growth, and happiness. London might not always be easy, but it’s a city full of opportunities and experiences waiting to be explored. This year, I’m ready to embrace it all—rain, cold, and everything in between.

If you’ve had a tough year too, know that you’re not alone. Let’s make 2025 a year to remember, one step at a time. What are your goals for the new year? I’d love to hear them.
