Mount Anak Krakatau erupted twice in a row on Monday (7/2). The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) explained the current condition of Mount Anak Krakatau.
Head of PVMBG Andiani said that the smoke from the crater started to appear before February 3. However, the crater smoke is not continuous.
"On February 3, there was smoke from the crater which continued and was followed by an eruption," Andiani explained at a press conference, Wednesday (9/2/2022).
"The condition of Mount Anak Krakatau on the 8th from our records did not show any crater smoke," continued Andiani.
Andiani then asked the public to remain vigilant and not to be consumed by hoax news related to the condition of Mount Anak Krakatau.
"However, what is important is that we must remain careful and vigilant and of course not believe in fake news circulating with unknown sources," he said.
Meanwhile, the Geological Agency is taking the latest steps regarding Mount Anak Krakatau. The Geological Agency has sent an emergency response team.
The coordination is about strengthening monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau, monitoring for landslides on the body of Mount Anak Krakatau, and early warning of tsunamis.
"The suggestion for strengthening the tsunami early warning is to place tide gauges and buoys on the nearest island from Mount Anak Krakatau so that information on the potential for a tsunami can be known before the tsunami waves reach the coast which has the potential to cause casualties," he explained.
Mount Anak Krakatau has erupted twice on Monday (7/2). The first eruption occurred at 07.03 WIB, bursting volcanic ash 600 meters above the peak. This first eruption was recorded on the Geological Agency seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 mm and 103 seconds.
