Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the United States was "ready to take additional action if the Burmese military did not change its actions".
Min Aung Hlaing and other top generals are already under US sanctions for abuses against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities.
EU lawmakers pass a non-binding resolution urging the restoration of civilian rule. Britain also sees further steps that could be implemented, said UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.
"The international community will not accept a coup in Myanmar and we will hold them accountable," he said.
The UN Human Rights Council will discuss Myanmar at a special session on Friday (12/2). The draft resolution proposed by Britain and the European Union has been sponsored by 22 of the 47 forum members.
