According to the University of Pennsylvania, a team of researchers exploring the archaeological site of Lagash in southern Iraq found a public eating area that dates back to 2700 BC.

One of the ancient settlements in southwestern Asia had a "tavern" that was 5,000 years old, according to archaeologists.

There are numerous seats, a "zeer," a type of clay refrigerator, an oven, and storage containers, many of which still have food inside.

The tavern was found in Lagash while archaeologists searched for artifacts that represented urban life at the time.

According to Holly Pittman, a lecturer in Penn's department of art history, "the site is tremendously important politically, economically, and religiously." But we also believe Lagash to be a sizable population center with easy access to agricultural land and a populace committed to extensive handcraft manufacturing.

Pittman compares the old city to Trenton, New Jersey, which was once the hub of East Coast manufacturing.
