Shrove Tuesday is the celebration that concludes the week of the seven fat days of carnival, during which many famous parades take place; precedes Ash Wednesday which instead marks the beginning of Lent.
In Europe, the fact that the Christian custom of abstinence during Lent is less practiced than in the past has made Carnival lose its ancient connection to the religious aspect.
In fact, tradition wanted all the most delicious foods left in the house to be consumed on this day, which could not be eaten during Lent, such as meat. Due to the fact that fatty foods were consumed, the last day of carnival is called Shrove Tuesday in Italy and Mardi gras in France.
During Shrove Tuesday it is customary to dress up in various ways and parade through the city streets; each Italian region has its typical masks.
