Blurtmusic: Drug-oriented records on this day?

in blurtmusic •  3 years ago

1971 - Procol Harum
The Illinois Crime Commission issued a list of 'drug-oriented records' including 'White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane, ’A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ by Procol Harum and The Beatles 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.'

So who's this Illinois Crime Commission? I'm not familiar with this institution but they do have a website detailing their modus operandi. Based on what I read they are a nonprofit dealing with public safety.

They state it more eloquently than I

The Illinois State Crime Commission is a non-profit organization with a mission to raise awareness to issues that impact victims of crime in Illinois and to publicly acknowledge the bravery and sacrifices made by those who secure the safety of the people of Illinois .

I wonder if they still believe these classic songs are doing true harm? I think there are bigger fish to fry but maybe the fish were huge in 1971 according to them. These days I think people recognize these as classics songs of the era that are worth a revisit once in awhile.

What did they think of NWA and the gangster rap era? Now that would be interesting.

Someone made a Spotify list too!

Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale

Jefferson Airplane -White Rabbit

The Beatles - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Speaking of white rabbits I can't help but laugh in the scene from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Sometimes people need to test their limits once in awhile. This is what the Illinois Crime Commission was fearing I suppose.

This is definitely the devil's music and should only be allowed to be played with a serious parental discretion warning...

... but to be honest most parents in the 70s would be too stoned to read the warning.

The "Illinois Crime Commission" seems like it started out as a neighborhood watch and then became a witch hunt and that lobbies Washington. That's just a guess from what I see hear. But when it comes to word associations my first thought is Sicily.

The strange thing is this organization was establish in 1994 and the music here is from the 70s. I think it does have something to do with this:

Hmm 1994 that's odd. A good spot with the Zappa reference. The recent doc had a section on this very speech made by him and how he often spoke out on such issues when nobody else was.

The speech by Dee Snyder at the same time is something to hear. Rockers aren't dum-dums like they thought and have some real insights into what was happening at the time.

In my opinion, music nowadays is way more harmful. Here in Latin-america, there are 2 so-called "urban" genres that since their beginnings caused a huge (and wrong) impact in society, they are: reggaeton, originated in Puerto Rico (disgusting lyrics and even worse rhythm), and more recently: trap, which I think is a sub-genre of rap and Hip-hop that originated in the US, with the most pornographic lyrics you can imagine, exaggerated use of auto-tune (because not one of its "singers" has talent at all), and a disgusting rhythm.
Both of them helped increase the teenager pregnancy in all LatAm.
