It was in Rome.
A street vendor in Trastevere or maybe Piazza Navona, or maybe it was near the Spanish Steps ??? …. I was a student there and it was December. The streets were lit with Christmas lights and it was cold and raining. I missed the snow back in Canada. But I noticed everyone had these paper bags with Roasted Chestnuts and I had to try some….
They were warm, soft and delicious.
It was a great memory of my 1st Christmas in Rome.

Was it over an open fire at Christmas ?
My father used to love chestnuts, and he'd joyfully bring a big bag home every Christmas time. He would score them and roast them in the oven, I think. They were so good!!! I have not been able to recreate them. I think the chestnuts are not as juicy and sweet as they used to be.
I can honestly say I have never had a roasted chestnut. When I was a boy I thought it was something that was only ever sung about! I never realised they were actually a real thing to eat!
Me neither…. Until that cold rainy December day in Rome.
