Perhaps you've heard Johnny Cash sing his version of Nine Inch Nail's Hurt. This is a song I like that's covered by another artist.
Johnny Cash - Hurt
In 2002 Johnny Cash played an acoustic version of Hurt in a story telling personal testimony. Facing his own death and the pain of living, Johnny adds wisdom and depth to an already soul tearing song. His own life gives clear meaning to the words that Nine inch nails had written.
The video adds to the pain Johnny felt as he returns to his old house and remembers the tragic premature death of his older brother Jack. His wife June stands by Johnny to the end knowing the pain he carries. At the end of the song Johnny pours out a cup of wine as to cover his life of pain. The song ends with,
"If I could start again a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way."
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
The original version of "Hurt" was about the pain of living in 1994. The cries of pain are accompanied by piano and electric guitar and screaming fans. The original version was "crown of shit". Johnny sang, "crown of thorns" symbolizing the cross that was taken.
Whether it was sung by Johnny or Nine Inch Nails the song reminds us that humans are mortal. The shouting crowds fade away. The accomplishments and shouts for encores are no longer heard. The great vanish with time. There is no way to start again.
"I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real."
The truth here is we all carry pain and it is real.
