Fastball bassist Tony Scalzo composed the song after reading a newspaper article describing the disappearance of an elderly couple, Lela and Howard Raymond from Salado, Texas who left their home in June 1997 to attend Pioneer Day. festival, in Temple, Texas and never reached their destination. They were discovered two weeks later, dead, in a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas, hundreds of miles from their end of the trail. is a single by the American alternative rock band Fastball. It was released in 1998 as the first single from his second studio album, All the Pain Money Can Buy.

It reached number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks in April and stayed there for seven weeks. The song also reached number one in Canada. In addition, it was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1999 in the category Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocalist.
