It is based on the classic French composition Plaisir d'amour by Jean Paul Égide Martini. Elvis recorded the song on March 23, 1961 on Radio Recorders. The song was used by Elvis Presley again in his television show for NBC known as '68 Come Back Special and later to close his live concerts, as would years later Celine Dion. The theme was used in the 2008 Coca-Cola Christmas commercial.

Although the song was not Presley's own, the singer put a personal mark on it by changing some verses and taking it to fame.
"I can't help falling in love" ("I can't help falling in love") was established as Elvis Presley's most iconic song.

The lyrics are related to romanticism and explain in three minutes what it feels like to be in love. Presley used metaphors and word games that refer to the intensity that occurs when one person loves another and cannot wait to establish a relationship or an encounter.

Presley closed all his live concerts with this single until shortly before passing away, when he was 42 years old.
