Indian folk music was first known in ancient Vedic literature around 1500 BC. Many historians and experts are of the opinion that various genres of folk music have been flowing in these regions since before the creation of a united India. For example, a popular folk song in most parts of central India is the Pandavani, which is thought to be contemporary with the Hindu epic Mahabharata. This folk music is also very popular in Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. This style of folk music has been going on in the same way for centuries.
