That's A Great Song.
Review This Song
The song is definitely catered to mainstream radio play than music from the Stoney album. Stoney incorporates different styles and even features one of my favorite songs, “Feeling Whitney,” which is more of an acoustic song.
However, focusing more on the new single, when I first listened to it, I wasn’t extremely thrilled. I am a huge fan of Post Malone. I’ve listened to his entire Stoney album, I intend on getting some merchandise at some point and I am patiently waiting for his new album to drop. So, when at first I didn’t really like the song as much as his others, I was disappointed.
First off, 21 Savage, “mumble rapper” threw a few verses into the song. I honestly think that’s just what he did; threw them. I’m not sure if he totally missed the memo, but in the first few lines of his verse he says he’s feeling like a pop star. Savage... this song is called Rockstar. He then follows it with some generic flow with some generic rhymes.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise if you have watched the 2017 XXL Freshmen Cypher with Kodak Black, Lil Yachty, Savage and several others who fall into the category of mumble rap. To compare, please listen to the 2014 XXL Freshmen Cypher, featuring Chance the Rapper, Isaiah Rashad, Kevin Gates and August Alsina. The two videos are not even close in skill and talent. It’s almost embarrassing to watch.
Before this becomes a dog session on 21 Savage, let’s bring it back to Rockstar. Personally, I might be a little biased because of my love of Malone, his music and his personality during interviews, but eventually I did grow to like the song a little bit more than when I first listened to it. In a way, it reminds me of the same theme of the band Nickleback’s song #Rockstar: fame gone out of control.
Malone is an artist. So I have full confidence in his next album. Though some may label him as a rapper, he is also talented in other genres of music, is a guitar player and can sing very well.
According to an interview by Mass Appeal, at the beginning of his career he would work at an old Italian restaurant playing music while the customers dined. If you haven’t heard any of his early work, I encourage you to listen to the covers of songs he has done. For example, Malone did a cover of Bob Dylan’s song “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.” Watching both the interview and the Bob Dylan cover truly made me believe Malone is a great artist.
Even if the song Rockstar wasn’t my favorite song of his, I am still looking forward to his album dropping.
Love it 😍
