⚠️WARNING: The following reading contains SPOILERS from "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness". ⚠️
The new from Marvel Stuios and its famed MCU has cemented itself as a blockbuster, however its reception from fandom has been mixed. One of the contributing factors to that is the film's villain, #ScarletWitch.
In an interview for io9, its screenwriter Michael Waldron explained the character's villainous turn, calling it an "accelerated descent into madness" following the events in #WandaVision.
"Yes, it's an accelerated descent into madness for her, but one that was earned by the fact that she came out of WandaVision with the Darkhold and the knowledge that she was Scarlet Witch. The last scene of that series, her tag, is her reading the Darkhold and hearing the voices of her children. I think this movie the Darkhold has taken hold of her and what really haunts her is, perhaps, less than her pain, her anger. The residual anger of all the traumas she has faced in her life.
Waldron further explained that he believes Wanda raises some very valid points during the film. Among them, the hypocrisy of heroes like Stephen Strange, who are able to break the rules and get away with it, while she is seen as the villain for doing so. This point was heavily emphasized in the marketing material for the film.
I also think Wanda makes good points in this movie. That all these heroes are hypocrites. Stephen and these guys break the rules and they are her heroes. She does and she's a villain. It doesn't seem fair. And they push her to her breaking point and you see what happens.
Finally, the screenwriter defends the evolution of the character in the film, which concludes with a ton of questions to be answered on potential appearances in the MCU.
