HBO has released a brief clip from the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off series, The House of the Dragon, introducing fans to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the next in line to succeed King Viserys.
In this brief teaser, taken from the recent trailer, Rickard Stark, Corlys Velaryon and Boremund Baratheon kneel to swear allegiance to King Viserys I Targaryen, but also extend that oath to his firstborn, Princess Rhaenyra, played in live-action by Wanderlust star Emma D'Arcy. You can watch the brief teaser below
This story takes place some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and tells the story of the Targaryen dynasty from George R.R. Martin's novel Fire and Blood. When Aegon the Conqueror arrived on the shores of the Seven Kingdoms with Balerion the Black Dreadnought, one of the greatest dragons in history, the proud houses of Westeros bowed to the invader, thus beginning the reign of House Targaryen until its fall during Robert's Rebellion in 280 BC.
The upcoming spin-off series is set in the middle of these 300 years of rule, sometime between 103 BC and 129 BC when the fifth Targaryen king Viserys I took the Iron Throne. As for Rhaenyra, the young princess is the heir apparent to Viserys I, while her uncle Prince Daemon Targaryen also known as the Prince of the City, roams the Red Keep as the heir presumptive and direct rival to Rhaenyra.
The House of the Dragon, the first series in HBO's extensive slate of Game of Thrones spin-offs, will premiere worldwide on August 21 this year.
