The movie focuses on three of these women, who are excellent mathematicians working in a back room of NASA's segregated Langley facility. Taraji Henson stars as Katherine Johnson, a born math prodigy. Watching these three ladies work is one of the film's genuine joys. Henson, Spencer, and Monáe have fantastic chemistry, but they also bring a lot of reality to their roles, even when their sequences are a little too obvious.
Each of these smart women is poised for advancement, but they all face racial or sexist obstacles at every turn. Kevin Costner plays Al Harrison, the group's director who is under intensive federal scrutiny. This often works in the film's advantage, but not always. Their additions may occasionally detract from the main tale, but they also provide an accurate portrayal of the repressive norms and attitudes of the time. Then there's Parson's wholly fictitious persona, who serves as a channel for those preconceptions. Kirsten Dunst plays a similar fictional character, but she handles it far better.
"Hidden Figures" is a polished Hollywood film from start to finish, but the story's intensity and importance, as well as the three primary performances, easily outweigh any flaws. I'd even throw in Kevin Costner, who delivers some of the year's best supporting performances. These personalities simply have an appealing charm that makes spending time with them a pleasure. And, no matter how predictable it is, this is a powerful, motivating narrative that has to be told.
