The haunting picture penned and directed by Aster unfolds as a harrowing expedition into desolation, with each stage more appalling than the last until the final climax of sheer horror.
It does this by using slow-boiling horror rhythms. It starts out as a heartbreaking family drama, but as Aster gradually peels away the story's outer layers, its dark and incredibly unnerving core emerges.
In the title character in the movie, Toni Collette is exceptional. She performs the role of Annie, a miniature artist who frequently bases her work on her personal experiences. She happens to be Ellen Taper Leigh's child. You recall the deceased woman from the obituary I mentioned earlier?
It is evident from Annie's eulogy at her mother's burial that their relationship was tense. We also realize how difficult Annie's upbringing was. Her mother suffered from dementia, her brother was schizophrenic, and her father struggled with psychotic depression. All of that contributes to Annie's state of mind, but it also contributes to the film's deliciously unsettling horror element, which simmers at its core.
Plot-wise Being deliberately ambiguous is pretty important. The effect is better the less information you have entering. The movie moves a little slowly at first as the pieces are put together, but once the psychological nightmare starts to unravel, it steadily becomes more and more unsettling. With each scene, Aster's examination of bereavement and mental illness becomes darker and nauseating.
The movie "Hereditary" is actually frightful, not in the sense of gory, disgusting, or sloppy jump-scares. "Hereditary" quietly draws you in before stirring up your nerves and your senses with excellent performances, a superb directorial debut, and steeped in Colin Stetson's deliberately ominous score. That kind of 'horror' really gets to me.
